DARCY PATTERSON
Triumvirate
- 3 Doors, Hinges and brackets -
LOCATION NO. 6
This piece is a response to the theme of “connections”. My
practice involves the exploration of doors by testing their
boundaries and limitations. This piece is an experiment in balance and combination. Typically doors cannot stand without their frames and hinges, so I wanted to see if by combining the 3 separate doors they could balance and become self-supporting. When they are combined and placed through and around each other, they are able to stand together and are freed from their usual constraints. Meaning without one, the rest would fall, and there is greater power in being united together than standing alone.
ARTIST STATEMENT
I am a sculpture and multimedia artist based in Belfast and
current QSS studio member. Within my practice I try to create
spectacle from normal household furniture pieces, and more
specifically doors. We use doors repeatedly throughout our lives, but we rarely interact with them off the hinges and out of context, or give them any extraneous thought. But doors are also symbolic of change, confinement and freedom. I like to change physical doors to give them new purpose and meaning through a variety of methods which include combining, cutting, reconnecting, destroying, rebuilding and changing their forms.
My practice also focuses on form and function as I like to change a formerly functional item into a new and interesting structure. Most of the doors I use within my practice have been discarded or are no longer functional, so with these changes, a new sense of purpose and life is created.
